Purchased two courses for my 13 year old Son who’s loves riding bikes. He often tinkers. The maintenance course and tuning was perfect for my boy. He learned so much. Was given lots of fantastic advice on how to get his bike back on the road. Just wonderful!
Thank you Steve! Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this course and learned a lot in 3 hours. Steve is a great teacher, he explains the various techniques of tuning the derailleur very well before we all do it together and then give his time in a tight schedule to come look at each bike. Its great to learn how it all works and now I look forward with more confidence and exitement to work on my bikes. Thanks Steve

Steve is very experienced and very generous in sharing his skills and experience. He was able to guide me through several important aspects of bike maintenance and allowed me to perform these so that I felt competent to do it myself. He shared lots of tips and tricks in maintaining my bike eg what’s important, what’s not, what to look for, how to buy tools, the benefits of dropping the wheels and chain off to give the bike a proper clean just to name a few. I plan to do the Drivetrain and Tuning short course next year. Thanks Steve!

I really enjoyed this course and came away with a lot in just three hours. Steve was fantastic — really knowledgeable about bikes and full of practical tips that I can use straight away to keep my bike in top shape. His teaching style made everything easy to follow, and I feel much more confident about doing my own maintenance now. Highly recommend it!

For the non-mechanical person that I am, this course certainly gave me some tips and tricks into now not always having to take my bike to the shop... Well worth it and I recommend it.

Took a great 3-hour bike maintenance class with Steve. Learned so much about how gears and brakes work. Hope to take more classes here in the future.

Would only mention this is a foundational knowledge class. It prioritised teaching a full understanding of the mechanical workings of the bike but I'd been hoping for a bit more doing. Mostly exposition with interludes to experience adjusting the gears and brakes and checking the chain stretch. We watched him change a tire in the last 5 minutes but didn't do it ourselves, and patching a tire isn't covered.

Steve was super knowledgeable and answered everyone's questions along the way. We moved between everyone's bikes looking at different types of brakes and gear sets.

I should have done this course years ago. An absolute joy to be able to enjoy learning about bike care by bike lovers more concern ed about how you take care of the machine than selling you a product. Thanks very much.

Did the beginners maintenance course with Ben and Steve, learned a lot and really recommend this to anyone else who rides frequently, wants to understand more about bike mechanics, and is keen to be more self sufficient. Will be signing up for the more advanced training later on!

Fantastic short course.
Both Ben & Steve are very friendly, engaging and make everyone feel at ease.
Very relaxed atmosphere and everyone felt comfortable to ask the dumb questions.
Highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn some basic and not some basic mechanical knowledge about bike maintenance and component functionality.

I took the basic bike maintenance course. 3 packed-in hours looking at gears, brakes, cleaning, and general mechanics of a bicycle. This course is a must-do for anyone that wants to get the most out of their bike. Ben and Steve were amicable and knowledgeable. I strongly recommend them!

Did the basic bicycle course this Saturday and didn’t know what to expect. Ben and Steve were great, made the entire experience well worth it. We had 9 people in my group, all from different cycle requirements. I knew very little about my road bike but found out plenty of useful information and got to do it on your own bike. Fitted a new chain as well. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to know a bit more about how to adjust parts in your bicycle. Going back for an advanced course.

I attended the Bike Maintenance course run by 1226 Bikes on 27/8/22 and found it to be well conducted, educational, fun and inspiring. Presenters, Steve and Ben, shared the presenting and assisting with practical application of the lessons taught. They also made sure that they spoke in language appropriate to the knowledge and experience of participants. Whilst having knowledge far in excess of most participants, Steve and Ben, were not patronising and did not talk down to participants.
I have no hesitation in recommending this course as a great introduction to maintaining bicycles.

A brilliant beginners' bike maintenance course. I was going into the three-hour course with a VERY low base of knowledge (I cannot understate how ignorant I am) but Ben and Steve were incredibly patient, tailoring the delivery of information in such a way that I didn't get left behind, but without dragging the rest of the class down. They were kind and patient in providing me extra assistance in the practical component of the course and were incredibly affirming. I learned a lot and I actually now feel quite confident to manage any little niggles or issues which come up while I'm riding. I will definitely go back to 1226 Bikes for any servicing, maintenance or parts I need and can wholeheartedly recommend their expertise, knowledge, teaching and welcome. If you know even a little about bikes, or ride bikes at all, the course is great to do!

Ben and Steve were welcoming, friendly, funny and knowledgeable. They answered all the questions I asked. They even replaced the chain and the rear gears on my bike without charging for the labour. Maximum of 10 people attend the class. It was great to see the diversity, some people were more knowledgeable than the others. In 3 hours lots of basic things like, cleaning chain, changing tyres, hydraulic brake pads, limiting gears, greasing, etc were covered. I will definitely be going again to learn the advanced course. Strongly recommend anyone to attend if you would like to be more confident when fixing your bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book.

Do I need to bring my own bike?

Yes — and that’s the whole point. Every course is BYO, so you learn on the exact bike you ride every day. By the end of the session you’ll know your own bike better than most riders ever do.

What skill level do I need?

None at all. Our courses are designed for everyday riders, not mechanics. Beginners are very welcome.

What’s the difference between the Maintenance and Tuning courses?

The Maintenance Course ($155) covers the essentials — cleaning, lubing, brake pads, punctures, chain care. The Tuning Course ($175) covers gear and brake adjustment so your bike feels dialled and responsive. You can do one or both.

Do I need to bring any tools?

No. All tools and workstands are supplied on the day. Just bring yourself and your bike.

How many people are in each group?

We keep groups small — typically around 6 people. This means you get genuine hands-on time and personalised attention.

Is my e-bike welcome?

Yes — ebikes are fully welcome. Our instructors are experienced with both mechanical and electronic groupsets across all major brands including Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo.

Can I buy a course as a gift?

Yes — gift vouchers are available for the Maintenance and Tuning courses. They make a great present for any cyclist.

Do you offer group or corporate bookings?

Yes. Group bookings are available for workplaces, cycling clubs, and private groups. Contact us at sales@1226.bike or call 0497 084 527 to discuss.
